A driver has died following a single-vehicle crash inside the M8 Tunnel at St Peters on Wednesday morning, prompting major traffic disruptions and a large emergency response.
Emergency services were called to the westbound lanes of the M8 Tunnel about 10:15 a.m. on May 13, 2026, after reports that a vehicle had crashed into the tunnel wall before catching fire.
According to police, the vehicle burst into flames following the collision, with crews from Fire and Rescue NSW responding quickly to extinguish the blaze.
Authorities confirmed the driver died at the scene before emergency responders arrived. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the incident.
Officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command established a crime scene inside the tunnel and are awaiting specialist police investigators to assist with inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
The M8 Tunnel has been closed in both directions and police say it is expected to remain shut for a considerable period while investigations and recovery operations continue. Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as traffic congestion builds across surrounding roads in Sydney’s Inner West.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased driver, pending formal identification and notification of next of kin.
Investigators are now working to determine what caused the vehicle to collide with the tunnel wall. Police stated that no additional information is currently available as inquiries remain ongoing.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area around the time of the crash is being urged to contact Marrickville Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The fatal incident has shocked commuters and residents throughout Sydney, while emergency crews continue their work inside the tunnel.
