CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA — The Charlottesville and Albemarle County communities are mourning the heartbreaking deaths of two 19-year-olds who lost their lives in separate automobile crashes Thursday, according to the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD).
Authorities identified the victims as Trippp Dwyer, a 19-year-old from Pennsylvania, and Walker W. Fendley, 19, of Charlottesville. Both young men died after suffering critical injuries in unrelated crashes that occurred just hours apart, leaving families, friends, classmates, and community members devastated by the tragic losses.
The first fatal crash occurred Thursday afternoon at approximately 2:35 p.m. in the 7500 block of Scottsville Road in Scottsville. According to ACPD, officers and personnel from the Albemarle County Fire Department responded to reports of a serious two-vehicle collision involving multiple victims.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they discovered three individuals suffering from life-threatening injuries. All three victims were transported to UVA Health for emergency medical treatment. Authorities later confirmed that Trippp Dwyer, who was driving one of the vehicles involved in the crash, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Police initially reported that Dwyer had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, but later corrected that statement, confirming he was in fact restrained during the crash.
The circumstances leading up to the Scottsville Road collision remain under investigation as crash reconstruction teams continue gathering evidence and reviewing the incident.
Then, just over eight hours later, tragedy struck again in Albemarle County.
At approximately 10:39 p.m., authorities responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 3100 block of Fontaine Avenue Extended. Investigators said the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree beside the road.
Three occupants were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. One passenger was reportedly ejected during the impact. All three individuals were transported to UVA Health for treatment.
Walker W. Fendley of Charlottesville later died from injuries sustained in the crash, authorities confirmed Friday.
According to ACPD investigators, speed has been determined to be a contributing factor in the Fontaine Avenue crash. Officials continue investigating the incident, and authorities indicated that charges are pending.
The deaths of both young men have sent waves of grief throughout the Charlottesville area, particularly among classmates, friends, and families struggling to process two devastating losses occurring within the same day.
Friends and loved ones have begun sharing tributes online remembering Trippp Dwyer and Walker Fendley as vibrant young men with promising futures ahead of them. Many described them as kindhearted, energetic, and deeply valued by those around them.
Trippp Dwyer is being remembered by friends and family as someone full of life, compassion, and ambition. His sudden passing has deeply affected both his hometown community in Pennsylvania and those who knew him in Virginia.
Walker Fendley’s death has also left a profound impact on the Charlottesville community. Friends describe him as loyal, outgoing, and someone who brought positivity and laughter into the lives of others. Emotional tributes have poured in across social media as loved ones honor his memory and offer support to his grieving family.
The tragic incidents have also renewed conversations surrounding roadway safety, seatbelt use, and the dangers of speeding, especially among young drivers and passengers. Authorities continue encouraging motorists to drive responsibly and remain vigilant on local roads.
ACPD Crash Reconstruction teams remain actively involved in both investigations as officials work to determine all contributing factors surrounding the crashes. Additional details, including possible charges related to the Fontaine Avenue crash, may be released as the investigations progress.
As Charlottesville and Albemarle County mourn the heartbreaking loss of two young lives, community members continue to rally around the families and friends affected by Thursday’s tragedies.
Funeral and memorial service arrangements for Trippp Dwyer and Walker W. Fendley are expected to be announced by their families in the coming days.
